This evening I attended the hustings at Oasis Academy to continue to listen and reply to questions from local residents. As I reminded them, Rishi Sunak was born in Southampton and has gone to London, I was born in London and have come to Southampton.
My role is to listen to residents and fight for what will improve their lives in Westminster, as the local MP. The local champion for Southampton. I will also work with local conservative councillors to ensure that the Labour run council is spending our money wisely and efficiently.
I explained that I am helping with local casework. Getting potholes fixed on Stubbs Road. Asking for the environmental team fix issues with rat infestations on Radstock Road. Helping a homeless man get accommodation rather than being left to sleep in a tent, because the council won't help him. These issues matter. My role is to listen and fight for what matters to you.
The people of Woolston told me they don't want a local candidate. They want the best candidate. They don't want someone that has been a local councillor and cabinet member in Southampton for years whilst the council is ranked 276th worst in the country, and has come third in two general elections.
They want someone with some vision, a clear plan, that will take the bold action required to bring the city back to the premier league, where it belongs.
