Today I canvassed residents and was told that the Labour run council has let residents down by their decision to turn off street lights at night.
One resident told me that they had come home one evening and saw pitch black streets. They thought there had been a power cut. His partner told me that she was afraid to go out at night due to the fear caused by pitch black streets. One of the things that a modern city, like Southampton, should have is a nighttime economy. It allows people to have fun, let off steam and enjoy themselves. That is compromised if people are afraid of coming home late at night when the street where they live is pitch black. The council must do more to keep residents safe and not trapped in their homes.
TURN ON OUR LIGHTS.
