Today I met with Alastair Welsh, Associated British Ports, Regional Director for Southampton. Alastair outlined Associated British Ports' growth, and job creation strategies, whilst also protecting the environment. Supporting large employers, such as Associated British Ports, who currently employ 15,000 people and support 26,000 jobs in the wider Hampshire and Solent area, is crucial to growing the economy and supporting the residents in Southampton. The port of Southampton currently has trade links with over 60 countries. The department for business and trade is looking to grow our economy in a post-Brexit world. Assisting local employers, such as Associated British Ports, is crucial to maximising opportunities for Global Britain. Whether it is importing or exporting food, cars or household items, ports play.a major role in our economy. The port also has a large number of cruise ships dropping off over a million passengers per year. The port of Southampton is integral to our economy. Alastair also agreed with me that it should be possible to develop parts of the waterfront to allow for more use by local residents and visitors. Southampton truly has a bright future.
If you are an employer in Southampton, I would like to hear from you.
