Today I visited local business - Ask Plastics - to meet with the founder, Kuldeep Kooner. and the managing director, Anaik Kooner. I listened to how we can recycle more plastics and become greener as a city and a country. We also discussed ideas about innovation for the future, by making better use of PPT. Funding could be used, by Ask Plastics, for research into more productive processes for recycling plastics, to increase the yield after recycling. This would reduce waste, reduce the volume of plastics produced and is better for the environment.
I also heard from the MD about how Ask Plastics could increase opportunities for mechanical engineering apprenticeships in the company. They already have female staff and those from a BAME background. The apprentices will be crucial to support future growth and export potential for the company. Ask Plastics is keen to create new local jobs for Southampton.
Ask Plastics could also be useful in making our plastics supply chain more resilient against any future pandemic. By ensuring that UK critical infrastructure, such as the NHS, can always obtain PPE equipment from UK certified suppliers, such as Ask Plastics, the UK will be more resilient and self sufficient should the worse happen again.
My visit to a local SME, Ask Plastics, making 100% recyclable plastics. They hire apprentices, and create high skilled jobs for young people.
