Today I listened to residents in Bitterne Park who told me they were extremely concerned about the Labour Council turning off streetlights at night.
Residents told me that they can understand that the almost bankrupt council needs to make cuts to save money, but compromising personal safety is simply unacceptable. Southampton City Council has an annual budget of £595 million pounds. The cost of keeping the lights on is £3,000 per week. The safety of residents, in particular women and girls is more important than £3,000 per week.
I will fight to change this absurd policy and ensure that streetlights remain on in Southampton. Keeping people safe is my top priority.
If you feel unsafe on your street because the streetlights are turned off, please get in touch with my office.
