This morning I attended the ConservativeHome Crime & Justice Conference in London. I managed to have a conversation with former Lord Chancellor, Sir Robert Buckland KC MP, and discuss with him how we can improve the safety of residents and businesses in Southampton Itchen. It's a key pledge of mine to tackle crime - to make the lives of residents safer, both physically and in cyber space.
I stressed to Sir Robert the views from many of my residents that the criminal justice system is not serving residents properly. Victims of petty crime do not feel that justice is being served. After residents call the police, police officers sometimes do not attend the scene of the crime. Residents feel that criminals are acting with impunity. Residents do not feel that there is adequate follow up from the police after a crime has been reported.
We must do better to serve residents. Residents must go about their daily lives without becoming the victims of crime.
